Puff embroidery, also known as 3D puff or 3D foam, is a process in embroidery that raises the surface of a design to make it appear three dimensional.

In order to create a three dimensional look, a piece of foam is inserted under the top stitch to raise the surface. There are many different techniques used for puff embroidery in order to create the desired effect. Typically the size of foam that will determine how much the embroidered design stands up from the garment. The most popular choice of foam is 3mm thick, but will depend on the look you’re trying to achieve. As the new layer is sewn over the foam, the end result can be revealed by removing the excess foam.

Puff embroidery is a great option if you’re looking for your design to pop and really stand out. If your logo or design is normally traditionally embroidered, consider puff embroidery to step up the design or highlight something specific.
